Victoria Falls is one of the major holiday destinations in Africa. Also known as Mosi-oa-Tunya (among the locals) which means the smoke that thunders, Victoria Falls is located on the Zimbabwe-Zambia border on Zambezi River. It was named Victoria by Dr. David Livingstone in honor of Queen Victoria. Victoria Falls is one of the most beautiful destinations and has been named one of the seven natural wonders of the world. The Falls which is the largest in the world has also been described as the greatest curtain of falling water. Victoria Falls is situated almost halfway along Zambezi River thus dividing it into two halves. This is said to be a distance of about 1677 miles from the river’s source. The falls gives its admirers different sightings depending on the season. In the rainy season, for example, visitors can spot columns of smoke and rainbow formations from miles away. This is as a result of the raised water levels in the Zambezi River caused by the rains. This season especially is the best time to visit Victoria Falls at the height of is spectacular glory. During the dry season, the water levels drop in Zambezi River leaving not much to see of the fall. The rainy season starts around November and ends in early May when the dry season kicks in. There are about six gorges spreading across the roughly 2km width of the Victoria Falls but the Zambezi River drains through one major gorge. This is where the fall’s concentration is highest. Some of the water divert from the main river and drain through the other gorges to form the spectacular Victoria Falls. The scenic view is made complete by the beautiful rain-forests that grow along the Zambezi River. A walk along the rain-forests will give you a cool refreshing breeze caused by the vapor formed from the falling waters. Tourists can get a view of the Falls from different points with the best point being the Knife-edge Bridge. The other points which also give an amazing view are the Lookout Tree, the Falls Bridge and the Devils Pool.

Activities at Victoria Falls

Victoria Falls is a favorite destination for its numerous exciting and unforgettable activities. Some of these include;

Swimming

Swimming at Victoria is one of the most unforgettable experiences. The best swimming point is known as the ‘Devil’s Swimming Pool’ at the falls starting point. It forms at one of the minor gorges on a natural rock where tourists splash and have fun in the water. There is no protective barrier to keep visitors from falling over the fall’s edge hence the best time to enjoy this activity is in the dry season. In the dry season-between September and December-the water level is low and thus the pool is almost still, almost like the normal swimming pools. However, this should not be a limiting factor since there are guides and lifesavers to ensure your safety.

Bungee Jumping

If you love heights and the feeling of adrenaline rushing through your body, Victoria Falls is the ideal holiday destination for you. Victoria Falls is known all over the world as one of the most exhilarating bungee jumping destinations. With a free fall of about 110m from the Victoria Falls bridge you are assured of experiencing a time of your life; especially with the beautiful scenery of the falls and the vegetation that you can take in as you free fall. This is a beautiful experience that will leave you feeling as if you have conquered the world!

Sunset Cruise

This is another activity that will take your breath away in the Victoria Falls. It would be ideal especially for honeymooners or as a romantic getaway activity. Even when visiting as a family or a group of friends, you do not want to miss the sunset boat cruising. After a long and tiresome day doing other activities at the Falls, a sunset cruise is the best way to relax and refresh your mind and soul. Cruising in the Zambezi River as you enjoy the last golden rays of the setting sun and a scenic view, you will wish the experience could last forever.

White Water Rafting

Being the fourth largest river in Africa, Zambezi River is known to be one of the best spots for white water rafting. The different seasons of the year offer different rafting experiences by taking care of both still waters and turbulent waters lovers. White water rafting will also be an ideal moment to take in the beauty of the rainforests that form along the Zambezi River. Prepare your best water rafting songs which will come in handy while enjoying this activity.

The Flight of Angels

As the name suggests, the Flight of Angels is an activity that gives you an angelic experience as fly over Victoria Falls in a helicopter while enjoying the scene from an aerial view. The terms referring to this activity were originally said by Dr. David Livingstone when he first saw Victoria Falls. He called it “a sight so wonderful that Angels must have gazed down on it in flight”. On boarding, the helicopter circuits over the Victoria Falls giving you the most excellent view of the Falls. Other activities to enjoy while on a Victoria Falls safari include boma dinners, horse riding, safari drives, safari walks, steam trains and fishing among other exciting activities.
